Thandie Newton was born on November 6, 1972 in Zambia. Her father, Nick Newton was british and mother, Nyasha was a Zimbabwean, a princess of the Shona tribe. She has a brother, James. Thandie's family moved to London at the age of four. Again her family shifted in Cornwall on England's south coast until age 11.

In Cornwall she enrolled in London's Art Educational School where she studied modern dance. After that, she received a degree in anthropology at Cambridge University.

In 1991, Thandie's first movie "Flirting" was released. John Duigan was the director of this movie. In this movie she played a role of Thandiwe Adjewa. In this movie, Nicole Kidman played a role of Nicola with Thandie.

Thandie had a small role of Creole slave Yvette in Interview with the Vampire (1994) alongside Tom Cruise. In 2000, she played a role of Nyah Hall, in the film Mission: Impossible II with Tom Cruise. Because of this movie, she had to pull out of the film Charlie's Angels.

In 1998, Thandie Newton married with Ol Parker who is writer and director. The couple has two daughters, Ripley (born in 2000), and Nico, (born in 2004). Thandie named her elder daughter as Ripley after the character played by Sigourney Weaver in Alien.

In 2004, another movie, "Crash" was released. Paul Haggis was the director of this movie. In this movie, she played a role of Christine. For this movie, Thandie won British Academy Awards as a Best Supporting Actress and was nominated for London Film Critics Association as Best British Supporting Actress. Also she won Empire Award as a Best Actress.
