Michelle Wie was born on October 11, 1989 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Byung-Wook Wie (BJ) and Hyun-Kyong Wie (Bo). Her father is a professor at Hawaii University and a two handicapper and her mother is in Real Estate and a former amateur golf champion in Korea. Afterwards her parents shifted to U.S. from Korea.

Michelle Wie starts golfing when she was just four years old. Her father teaches her. In 2000, when she was of ten years old, she was qualified by a USGA amateur championship at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship. She had won most of the amateur tournaments and wanted to became a pro-golfer after watching Tiger Woods play.

When Michelle became 12 years old she was nearly 6' in height. By seeing her height Tom Lehman gave her the nickname 'The Big Wiesy' like Ernie Els. Wie played against the men in on the PGA tour but her fascination for boys ends there and she says "I don't like boys, they're kind of annoying."

In March 2002 she played her 1st LPGA tour event. She failed to make the cut at the Takefujji Classic in Hawaii. At that moment she said "I'm not disappointed. I'm just happy to be here. She became the youngest winner of the Women's Amateur Public Links in June 2003.

Year 2005 was a lucky year for her. Though she didn't performed well at her second attempt at Sony Open, she has given another PGA exemption. A few months later she got a chance to play against men at the Men's Public Links where she shocked everyone by reaching in the quarterfinals.

On her 16th birthday on 5th October 2005 she announced that now she was became a professional by signing sponsorship contracts with Nike and Sony worth more than US$10,000,000 per year. Also at the same time she announced a pledge for Hurricane Katrina relief of $US500,000.
